OBJ’s Top Trends from the 77th Annual Golden Globes

Did you watch the Golden Globes? Don’t worry if you missed the show…the red carpet deets are all over Instagram. I enjoyed following Who Wore What Jewels throughout the broadcast as they broke down the winning looks by designer names, collections, and carat weights…and they’re still at it!

As for the TV coverage, E!’s Zana Roberts Rassi and Brad Goreski get my vote for best trendspotting. Their encyclopedic knowledge of fashion history and Hollywood’s top stylists led to predictions we can all take to the bank. Here are four of mine: OBJ‘s favorite fashion and jewellery trends from the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Head-to-Toe Bows

Love it or hate it, J.Lo was out to steal the show in a bow. Her dramatic green, gold and white satin gown by Valentino Haute Couture was complemented by breathtaking Colombian emeralds and diamonds from Harry Winston. ScarJo also embraced the bow, the backstory of her scarlet Vera Wang gown. Her stunning diamond choker and studs were from Bulgari. In a subtle nod to the season’s bow trend, Reese Witherspoon chose a white Roland Mouret sheath with a ribbon-like bodice. Her diamond earrings were by Tiffany & Co. Look for more bow motifs to pop up on future red carpets…and at jewellery and department stores near you.

Statement Sleeves

Cate Blanchett in Mary Katrantzou Couture took my breath away. Her tightly pleated sleeves recalled 1920s Fortuny designs, yet clearly this was a 21st century triumph. Cate’s red carpet look featured a built-in jeweled harness and cool blue gems by Pomellato. (Note: OBJ first profiled Katrantzou in 2015 when she won the British Fashion Council/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund Award.)

I also loved Beyoncé’s custom gown by Schiaparelli Haute Couture; its voluminous sleeves formed a perfect frame for diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. The famed House of Schiaparelli closed in the 1950s, but it has roared back thanks to the insanely talented Daniel Roseberry. If Katrantzou and Roseberry are championing Couture statement sleeves, they’ll be big in Ready-to-Wear very soon. Buy a wide cuff bracelet—or two—to celebrate.

Brooches for the Boys

It’s official: the brooch is back for men as well as women. My favorite Golden Globes brooch sighting was Rami Malek’s slightly sinister Juste Un Clou (Just a Nail) Cartier stickpin. Rocketman Elton John pinned a diamond and sapphire rocket by Theo Fennell to his Gucci jacket. And Aquaman Jason Momoa chose an Art Deco-style brooch with onyx, diamonds and an emerald, also by Cartier.

Diamond Layering

Sparkling white diamond chokers were the true stars of the 77th Annual Golden Globes. All the usual suspects turned up: Cartier, Tiffany Blue Book, Bulgari, Harry Winston, Lorraine Schwartz, Neil Lane, and Fred Leighton. However, the key trend that emerged, dubbed Diamond Layering by Town & Country’s Stellene Volandes, involves layered diamond necklaces… or one that looks like two or more.

Jennifer Aniston set the tone with a vintage two-row stunner by Cartier, the finishing touch for her fabulous black Dior. Gwyneth Paltrow layered two different pieces by Bulgari Fiorever High Jewellery underneath the bodice of her sheer Fendi gown. And while Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz and Greta Gerwig all donned single diamond chokers to great effect, I think one now seems lonely when the trend is at least two. Don’t you?
